In February last year I went to Bali and had a lovely time staying in Ubud for 10 days. When I went to Java in 1968 I was crazy about Indonesian traditional dance performance. People the said "Don't go to Bali. It is too touristy." How mad. I had to go to Bali on the way back from Amsterdam in 1989. There were offerings to the gods at every corner and there was wonderful Wayang Topeng in an alley behind the vegemite sandwiches and rock cafes in Kuta. I thought why didn't I go in in 1968! In Ubud last year I went to dance events organised for tourists on most of my 10 nights. The very best performance was the Gambuh of Gambuh Desa Batuan Ensemble. I am going back to Bali soon and was looking on the internet and was devastated to find that the Italian woman, Cristina Wistari Formaggia who spearheaded The Gambuh Preservation Project in 1992 and was in the perforance I saw, died in 2008. I took the attached photos at the time. RIP Cristina Wistari Formaggia. May the Gambuh live forever. I have posted my photos from the performance to Facebook http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=127098&id=686486215&l=e069b12a18
I hope people will continue to support this group.
