Pasola Warrior

Pasola is a battle on horseback between two opposing groups of clans, and is held in several districts of West Sumba. It can be translated as a ‘rain of spears’ as the warriors use blunt lances which they throw with great force. Essentially it is a fertility ritual, and though death is considered extremely unfortunate the (non-fatal) shedding of blood is said to help fertilize the ground. Here the first rider from Wanakaka sets forth on the beach.
